REIKI IS

The knowledge that an unseen energy flows through all living things and is connected directly to the quality of health has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. The existence of this "life force energy" has been verified by recent scientific experiments, and medical doctors are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process.

Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that allows everyone to tap into an unlimited supply of life force energy to improve health and enhance the quality of life.

The definition of Usui Reiki that is most often used is "Universal Life Energy".  Reiki is an enlightenment system and a healing art.  Some focus more on one aspect than the other.  That is, some teach Reiki only as a healing system while others may teach it only as a spiritual system.  Either is Reiki.  Reiki is primarily used in the West (i.e., the United States, Europe, and Australia) as a healing system.

The system of Reiki was invented and developed by a man named Mikao Usui (pronounced Me-ka-oh OOh-su-ee) in the early 1900's.  Reiki is often translated to mean "Universal Life Energy", but can also mean enlightenment or the coming of together of the Universal Spirit of Creation with our own.

Mikao Usui trained a number of teachers of this system.  Many of those teachers taught students of their own.  There are many lines of Reiki practiced in Japan from these teachers.  Usui founded a school there that is said to maintain his original teachings.  This school is called the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai.  They generally are a closed club and do not share information with outsiders.

Reiki as practiced in the west comes from the teachings of Mrs. Hawayo Takata.  Mrs. Takata was a student of Chujiro Hayashi, a retired Naval Officer and student of Mikao Usui.  Most western Reiki practices come from the teachings of Mrs. Takata.

At its most basic level, Reiki is a set of five principles for living, a set of hand positions for treating self and others, and the receiving of an attunement to connect to the reiki energy.  An attunement (or empowerment) is a simple ceremony that helps you to reconnect to the energy that is reiki performed by a Reiki teacher or "master"..

Reiki works by simple laying of hands and intent.  It helps brings us back into harmony with the Universal life energy.  This is often healing.

In reiki you do not use your own energy but let this loving Universal life energy flow through you to others.  People who do reiki are often called "reiki channels" or that one "channels" reiki.  This word "channel" has several meaning in the new age communities and in common use might mean "channel" as in spirits.  It needs to be clearly stated here that reiki is not about channeling spirits.  The word "channel" here in relation to reiki simply means that we are in tune with this Universal life energy and let it flow.

The ability to do Reiki cannot be learned in books.  To do reiki you need to receive an attunement from a reiki teacher.  This can be done in person, or via distance.

This is Reiki at its most basic.

FAQ about Reiki

What is Reiki?

Reiki (ray-key) is an ancient Japanese folk art that may have originated in Tibet and uses universal life force energy to heal.

Reiki is given through the hands of an individual who has been attuned to the energy.

What is its origin?

Reiki was rediscovered by Mikao Usui about 100 years ago.  The knowledge has been passed on through Chujiro Hayashi, one of Usui's students in Japan, and Hawayo Takata, who brought the practice to the western world after experiencing a healing in Hayashi's clinic.  Takata initiated 22 Masters, both Usui and Hayashi initiated 10-16 Masters.  The Reiki Society that was initially formed by Usui continues to meet in Japan today.

Today, Reiki is accepted throughout the world as an effective complementary approach to healing.

What are some effects of Reiki?

Reiki can:

  • Increase Awareness.

  • Balance Energy.

  • Increase Creativity.

  • Release Emotion.

  • Release Stress.

  • Work on Causal Level of Disease.

  • Amplify Energy.

  • Complement other Healing Modalities.

What is a Reiki treatment?

Typically, a Reiki treatment will take about an hour.  The client remains fully clothed, either lying down, or seated in a chair.  The practitioner will place his hands on specific spots on the head, torso and back; usually leaving the hands in each position for about five minutes.  Normally there will be a deep sense of relaxation, and at times there may be a sensation of the energy working in the body.

What is a Reiki "distance treatment"?

Distance is not an issue with regard to Reiki treatments.  A trained Reiki practitioner can treat a personal who is half way around the world, as long as the person has given permission.  To discuss this type of treatment for yourself, or a loved one who desires it, please complete the form on the Distance Treatment page.

Will Reiki interfere with other treatments or procedures?

No, a Reiki treatment will not interfere with other types of treatment.  In fact, the usual experience of people who are receiving "dual" treatments find that healing occurs more rapidly.

Reiki treatments can be performed in our office, or any place else that is convenient.  Simply contact us to make arrangements for us to come to where you are.
